This information is a collection of answers to the most common questions people ask about the TLSAE Course.

What is the drug and alcohol course? Is it the same course as the TLSAE, or DATA?

The Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course (TLSAE), is a required prerequisite course in order to receive your first learner’s permit in the state of Florida. It is a state mandated 4-hours and teaches students about the effects of abusing drugs and alcohol and provides the fundamentals of safe driving.

The course has been called by different names, but it is all the same course:

  • Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE)
  • The 4 Hour Drug and Alcohol Test
  • Drug Alcohol Traffic Education (DATE Course)
  • Drug Alcohol Traffic Awareness (DATA Course)
  • First Time Driver Course
What happens if I fail an identity question?
The state requires that identity security questions are answered at various points throughout the course. If you fail a question, you will be returned to the beginning of the chapter and you must start over from there. The answers to the identity questions are determined by you when you sign up for the course.
Who needs to take the Drug and Alcohol course (TLSAE)?

The state of Florida requires that all new drivers take the TLSAE course before they can get their learners permit. New drivers are considered those who have never had a license in any state, country, or jurisdiction.

Also, you have to retake the TLSAE course if you are under 21 years old and receive a notice of suspension for driving with a BAL of .02 to .05. You must complete the course before a hardship license can be issued.

Is this course approved by the state of Florida?

Big time. Our course has been 100% approved by the state of Florida DHSMV. But more importantly it has been approved by teens and parents like you!

Is the certificate of completion included?

Yes, as soon as you pass the exam we email you a copy of your certificate of completion. This is included in the upfront cost – we don’t like hidden fees and we know you don’t either.

Plus, once you have passed the test, we automatically let the DHSMV know you’ve completed your TLSAE requirements.

Do I need to finish the course all at once?
No. You can go at your own pace and start and stop as you like. Take the course whenever you like - there is no time limit. We track your progress and you start where you finished off last time.
Is there a test at the end of the TLSAE course?

Yes. The drug and alcohol test is composed of 40 questions, and students have to get 80% to pass. The TLSAE course is a minimum of 4 hours (state mandated) before the test can be taken. Students have unlimited attempts at passing the test at no additional charge.

NOTE: this exam is NOT the DMV Written Knowledge Exam. They are two different exams. This exam is for the TLSAE only. Once the TLSAE exam is passed, Lean In Learning notifies the DMV on your behalf. An additional Knowledge exam is required to get your permit/license (this can be taken at the DMV).

What do I do after I pass my TLSAE exam?

After high fiving everyone around you, it’s time to take the next step to your driving freedom. Once you pass the TLSAE you will be eligible to take the Learner’s permit test which is based on the Florida handbook. Download it HERE and get studying!

Are there any hidden costs/fees?
No there are no hidden costs or extra fees - you pay exactly $19.99. This price includes: the TLSAE course (first chapter is free), unlimited exam attempts, we notify the DHSMV on your behalf once you pass the exam, plus we email you a completion certificate. Hidden fees aren't cool.
